Dr Cripps Sports Psychology
02 February 2017: Sixth Form students of Psychology and Sports & Exercise Science welcomed Dr Barry Cripps, Chartered Psychologist, to Sexey’s School yesterday. Dr Cripps spoke to students about his life as a Psychologist from a career perspective, but also encouraged them to use specific techniques in their own lives to support learning and self-confidence.

Commenting on the lecture, Sixth Form student Georgia Silcox said, “I found it amazing that Dr Cripps only turned to Psychology much later in life and has still achieved so much after his career change. From working with the British archery and surfing teams to individual clients such as a show jumper who had nerves when jumping, Dr Cripps has experienced a wide range of the fascinating world of sport through his career as a Sports Psychologist. During the lecture Dr Cripps even showed us some of the techniques he has used to boost self-confidence and calm the nerves of top athletes, suggesting we use them during our exam period! The lecture has given me a broadened view on what a Sports Psychologist does and the range of people they can work with, opening my eyes to a possible career following my degree.”

A Fellow of the British Psychological Society, Dr Cripps won the Distinguished Contribution to the field of Sport and Exercise Psychology Award 2008. His work in Performance Psychology helps athletes, riders and actors enhance their performance, through a carefully designed programme of physical and psychological exercises.

His work with students is especially beneficial to help to reduce performance stress to manageable levels, enabling them to achieve optimal performance.
