Careers Conference Sexeys

4 July 2017: We welcomed fifteen employers from businesses in the local area into school today for a Careers Conference - part of our careers programme for students in Years 8 - 10.

The event was arranged to give students the opportunity to explore a variety of job sectors and find out what is involved in them on a daily basis – especially the skills, experience and qualifications needed to enter an increasingly competitive employment market.

The potential employers each gave 10 minute talks delivered on a carousel basis, with students choosing four talks to attend each. They spoke about routes into their respective businesses, including apprenticeships and graduate programmes. They discussed the reality of the work, including the day-to-day demands and challenges, and in particular, the attitudes required by employees to succeed.

Commenting, Jim Johnson, PhotosbyJim and Julia Moore, Julia Moore Floral Designs said, “It's important students have the chance to hear about the working challenges of a job and the many dimensions and demands - and also that it is common for people to have more than one career in a working lifetime. You don't always stick to the same thing!”

Richard Lovelock, Industrial Chemist added, “It was great to be able to talk to students who had chosen my presentation and who were keen to hear about my sector. The students were enthusiastic and engaged and the timing worked really well.”

Caitlin Taylor, Year 10 day student commented on the sessions, “It was really good to hear about jobs from people who are actually doing them. It gives you a much better insight.”

Year 10 day student Adam Beedle added, “It was very interesting. I'm not sure I would want to do all of these jobs but it's good to find that out, too.”

The employers and businesses taking part in the Sexey’s Careers Conference were: Ms. Emily Shields (Albert Goodman LLP), SSgt Sean Lynham (Army), Beat Manager Sara Stephenson (Avon & Somerset Police), Mr. Alan Simmons (Careers Specialist, Health Careers), Richard Lovelock (Industrial Scientists), Mrs. Julia Moore (Julia Moore Floral Designs), Ms. Emily Walton and Ollie (Leonardo Helicopters), Mr Austin Fews (NVB Architects), Mr Allan Tuffin (Pearce Seeds Ltd), Mr Jim Johnson (PhotosbyJim), WO2 Neil Hodgson (Royal Navy), Mrs. Denise Bottrill, (Taste Somerset), Mr. Mark Challon and Lewis (Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust).

The Careers Conference was organised by Wendy Watson, Independent Careers Adviser to Sexey’s School, and Sue Nurse, Head of Theology and Philosophy.
