We are a mixed 11-18 school with a comprehensive intake. We are one of only thirty eight state boarding schools and academies in the country and, with 260 boarders, we are one of the largest of these. The fact that so many of our students and staff live on the school site gives the school a strong family and community feel which makes it a very friendly and rewarding place in which to work.

IMG 8489The school is relatively small for a secondary school with around 550 students. Because the other secondary schools in our area are 11-16 we operate as the main post 16 provider for this part of Somerset. For a suitably qualified candidate therefore, Sexey’s would provide experience of teaching at all levels across the full secondary school range up to university entrance. In fact the majority of our sixth formers, usually well over 90%, will go on to higher education.

Sexey’s School has always had a strong academic tradition. In recent years the school has always featured prominently in the national league tables for comprehensive schools. The expectations here are high both in terms of the work ethic and student behaviour. Visitors to the school often comment that our students are polite, welcoming and confident without being arrogant and, above all, that they appear very happy at the school. This makes Sexey’s a fantastically positive school environment in which to work and it is set in one of the most beautiful areas of the country. So we feel privileged to live and work here.

DSCF0080Sexey’s is a Church of England Academy in the diocese of Bath & Wells, and while Christian affiliation is not a prerequisite for a teacher at Sexey’s, we do expect members of staff to support and embrace the Christian ethos we espouse. Similarly, an understanding of the boarding context of the school is essential and staff are expected to contribute to the boarding dimension. We are delighted if a colleague wishes to work in boarding, although this is not essential. Those who choose can be residential or non-residential, and this is subject to a separate contract and additional remuneration. As a boarding school we have shorter terms than other state schools but our school day is a little longer and staff are required to contribute to our After School Learning (ASL) programme.
